A suitable doormat for your PVC floor
Why is it that PVC floors, and even more so PU resin floors, don’t handle harmful plasticizers well? It’s a complex topic, but we’ll simplify it as much as possible.
PVC and PU resin floors are made of plastics, and all plastics contain plasticizers to make them flexible. Similarly, the backing of a doormat is often made of plastic and therefore also contains plasticizers. When two products with plasticizers are in prolonged contact, a chemical reaction can occur. We say can because it’s not guaranteed to happen. However, when it does, discoloration may appear. This can be caused by a doormat or other plastic items, such as a trash bin or plastic caps on chair, table, or sofa legs!
Some of our mats feature a 100% nitrile rubber backing, free from harmful phthalate plasticizers. Phthalates are proven to be damaging to your floor, and by eliminating these harmful plasticizers, the risk of discoloration is minimized.
That said, this doesn’t mean nitrile rubber is entirely free of plasticizers, which is why there’s an asterisk after “plasticizer-free.” Without any plasticizers, the backing would be as hard as concrete, which isn’t practical! For these reasons, our mats without harmful plasticizers are the best choice for your PVC floor and a much safer option than mats with a standard backing.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that discoloration will never occur, as the primary factor is the type and quality of the floor. This is especially critical for PU resin floors, which are extremely sensitive—even when using plasticizer-free mats.
