A coir mat has a natural look, it is robust, and pleasantly thick. It seems like the kind of mat that will do its job well and last a long time. But unfortunately, we have to burst that bubble. There is a reason we do not offer coir mats. Let us explain why this type of doormat simply does not deserve the name Mattigo.
Moisture and Coir Do Not Mix
Here is the first issue. While our indoor doormats not only clean your shoes but also dry them, a coir mat only does the former. That is because coir fibers do not dry easily and tend to stay damp. In other words: once wet, always wet. Not only is it impractical to have a soggy mat lying at your front door, but it can also start to mold. Since it is a natural product, the fibers can actually rot when exposed to moisture. Many people like the rustic look of a coir mat as an outdoor doormat by the door, but that is exactly where you should not place it. Blame the unpredictable weather.
Coir Mats Are Hard to Clean
Coir mats are generally thicker because of their longer fibers. The downside is that they are much harder to clean, as dirt gets stuck deep inside the mat. A vacuum cleaner does not do the trick, and if you beat the mat with a rug beater, you will only damage it. In fact, beating any mat is a bad idea since none of them are designed for that. Thinking of using a coir mat to fill the recessed depth of a crawl space hatch? You can do that with a Mattigo mat too. Just add a filler mat underneath and you are good to go.
Wear and Tear Makes Coir Look Worse
Got a stain on your coir mat? Hopefully, it looks a little artistic, because you will not get it out. The fibers absorb stains like dye, meaning the mark will only fade with wear. Which brings us to another drawback: coir mats wear down. Fibers come loose, the mat frays, and any colors or prints quickly fade. The polyamide fibers we use in our custom-made doormats do not have any of these downsides. Stains do not stick, colors do not fade, and fraying simply does not happen. That is because the fibers are heat pressed into the mat’s backing, making every part of the mat equally strong and keeping the edges neat.
With a Mattigo Mat, You Win
The choice is simple: go for a Mattigo. You will get a stylish mat that keeps its strength and looks over time. On top of that, we will make your new doormat completely to measure. So leave the coir where it belongs, on the coconut.
